What to Wear for Maternity Photos: 3 Outfit Tips for Dreamy Beach Maternity Photos in Manitoba
Planning your maternity photos and wondering what to wear? You’re not alone! Choosing outfits is one of the biggest concerns for many moms-to-be before their session.
As a Winnipeg maternity photographer, one of my goals is helping you feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera. The right outfit can make a huuuuuge difference in how your images look and feel and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself when you look at your photos!
Recently, I photographed Rachelle and Q during a golden hour maternity session at Bird’s Hill Beach and they absolutely nailed their outfits. Here are three simple tips you can use when planning your own beach maternity photos.
1. Skip Busy Patterns
Patterns aren’t always a bad thing, but simple outfits tend to photograph best.
When clothing is free from bold prints and busy patterns, the focus stays exactly where it should be—on you, your growing baby bump and your partner!
Soft, solid colours create a timeless look that won’t feel dated years from now when you’re looking back through your photos.
2. Add Texture Instead
Want visual interest without overwhelming your photos (who doesn’t!)?
Texture is the answer. Texture texture texture. I could yell this one from the rooftops haha! Texture makes your images SO much more interesting to look at!
Check out the ruching on Rachelle’s dress and the square texture on Q’s shirt. Think about incorporating a variety of fabrics like linen, denim, lace, or subtle woven materials. Texture adds depth and dimension while keeping the overall look soft and elegant.
For this maternity session, the texture in both outfits helped create beautiful detail while still keeping the focus on the couple.
3. Choose Light, Warm Colours
Golden hour and warm-toned outfits are a match made in heaven.
Soft creams, beiges, warm whites, blush tones, and muted earth colours complement the natural glow of sunset and help create that dreamy, romantic look so many parents love.
Lighter colours also help keep images feeling bright and uplift your faces! Light colours are especially perfect for such a sweet phase of life and they fit extra well for maternity photos (although I’m a fan of light colours for photos always)!
